O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high marks from the judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, as well as the second place. It was a shock to the judges and they advised that the public choose Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. Her performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
